Navigate the Intern and Co-op Hiring Process
Use this guide to navigate the intern and co-op hiring process: from planning your opportunity, to posting it in Handshake, and preparing for a successful experience.
-
Start with a Purpose
- Internships and co-ops give students the chance to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. If you don’t have a program yet, we’re here to help—contact our Experiential Education team at experientialed@kennesaw.edu.
-
Register & Post in Handshake
- Create a free employer account in Handshake, KSU’s career platform. Once approved, you can post your opportunity to over 20,000 current students.
-
Build a Strong Position Description
- Include a short overview of your organization
- Define qualifications (e.g., major, year, skills)
- Outline responsibilities and learning outcomes
- Use O*NET OnLine to help define duties and tasks
-
Plan the Logistics
- Choose the semester and weekly hours (10–15 hrs/week is typical for part-time)
- Decide if the internship will be paid (recommended: $10–$15/hr; minimum: $7.25/hr)
- All co-op positions must be paid
- If unpaid, ensure compliance with FLSA guidelines
-
Consider Academic Credit
- If you'd like your intern to earn credit, plan ahead. Credit-bearing internships must align with academic semesters and department requirements. See Program Requirements by Major for details.
-
Assign a Supervisor
- Designate someone who can provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship throughout the experience.
