  • Mechatronics projects mesh creativity with engineering

Where is the fun in a pinball machine that can play itself? How about pancakes that can cook themselves? For students in Kennesaw State University’s Department of Mechatronic Engineering, the intrigue is less about the act and more about what goes on behind the scenes to make it possible. From a fully automated pinball machine to a pancake vending system that can cook without human intervention, several student teams recently took full advantage of their senior capstone coursework to prove that engineering can be creative while practical.  –  June 24, 2020

  • KSU professor receives grants to combat white-nose syndrome in bats

Kennesaw State assistant professor of microbiology Chris Cornelison has earned two research grants totaling more than $300,000 over the next two years—one from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and another from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) —to address how to mitigate the spread of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease causing the rapid decline of tri-colored bats.  –  June 23, 2020

  • KSU donor endows scholarships to help those who help others

Retired businessman Mike Hammond is showing his appreciation for the nursing profession, and Kennesaw State University students are the beneficiaries. Hammond is providing financial aid to students enrolled in both the Wellstar School of Nursing and KSU Journey Honors College, through the Henry Michael Hammond Scholarship Endowment that was established at the end of last year. The Forsyth County resident was inspired to donate to a university with a nursing school as a thank-you for the exceptional care he received from nurses – a number of whom were Kennesaw State graduates – while being treated for health issues.  –  June 22, 2020

  • Music major and Honors student embraces life with gusto

Bryson Brozovsky, a junior Honors student in the School of Music at Kennesaw State University, is rather soft-spoken when he first begins talking about his life, work and hobbies. However, his voice is soon filled with an energy that foreshadows his many accomplishments, including his own page on the popular professional actor site IMDb, doctoral-level research and performing in his first opera. Brozovsky discusses his work on deciphering ancient Gregorian chant manuscripts, his passion for music and his love of performing.  –  June 21, 2020

  • Engineering professors collaborate with Wellstar to decontaminate N95 respirator masks

Faced with a shortage of N95 respirator masks used heavily by healthcare professionals amidst the coronavirus pandemic, a team of Kennesaw State University engineers assisted Wellstar Health System nurse leaders, operations, facility engineering, sterile processing and a project manager in developing an operational plan for their newly built UVGI room to decontaminate masks for reuse.  –  June 19, 2020

  • State Department research project pairs KSU students with U.S. Embassy in West Africa

An interdisciplinary team of Kennesaw State University students led by anthropology professor Brandon D. Lundy spent the spring semester exploring immigration issues for the U.S. State Department in an effort to help officials understand the complexities of immigrant experiences as they determine who are granted visas from Cabo Verde, an island country off the coast of West Africa.  –  June 17, 2020

  • KSU alums help create COVID-19 tests

Working long days and sometimes overnight shifts, three Kennesaw State alums—all of whom received their inspiration and training in the lab of associate professor of biology Scott J. Nowak — have a critical task during the coronavirus pandemic.  –  June 17, 2020

  • History Professor Explores Georgia's Powerful Peach

Growing up in middle Georgia, William “Tom” Okie ate his fair share of peaches. Now as associate professor of history at Kennesaw State, he has taken on a bigger bite, researching and writing about the fruit’s agricultural and cultural history in Georgia. Okie set out to better understand how this sweet summer fruit, with its deep historical roots in Georgia, became a major crop and a central symbol in the state’s redevelopment after the Civil War. His book, The Georgia Peach: Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South, peels back the layers of how this non-native fruit helped the state break from the rocky reputation of its agricultural past, and now stands as a cultural icon.  –  June 15, 2020
