Academic advising is engaging with a student to help the student process and achieve their goals. Advising sessions are a collaborative process with the goal of helping students understand the curriculum as well as develop personal and educational goals. Academic advising is not telling a student what to do, but talking about options that can help them reach their goals. Every student is unique, so our approaches to academic advising are tailored individually to the student.
The following advising methods are offered at the Undergraduate Advising Center:
Professional Advisor
Professional advisors are seasoned advisors whose sole charge is to advise students in the Radow College of Humanities and Social sciences. Our professional advisors work with students to explore who they want to become personally, professionally, and academically. Professional advisors utilize intrusive advising techniques, appreciative advising techniques, and academic coaching to help student attain their goals. Our advisors are members of NACADA (National Academic Advising Association), our professional development organization, that helps us stay engaged and up to date with best practices in advising.
Faculty Advisor
Faculty advisors bring a wealth of industry experience and expertise that can help students understand the various career opportunities related to their degree. Faculty advisors can also help students decide whether or not a certificate or graduate school is the right next step and help them navigate that process based on their background, academic performance and future goals. Faculty utilize prescriptive advising to help students learn about course work and the necessary pre-requisites, as well as developmental advising to get students involved in research and connected with faculty that share their interests.
Career/Internship Advisor
Career and internship advisors discuss all internship and career possibilities within the student's chosen major. These advisors can help with job searches, resume writing, interviewing skills, and navigating career fairs while also assisting students with job negotiation skills, finding on-campus jobs, exploring majors and careers through various assessment tools, and best practices for interacting with others in a professional environment.
