While pursuing a degree in information systems with a minor in information technology, Deja Boney devotes her time outside the classroom to volunteering with Kennesaw State’s Department of Student Volunteerism and Service.

What began as a one-time attendance at an OwlServe Day sparked a passion for community service. Now a seasoned volunteer, Boney serves as a site leader and KSU Service Fellow for the department.

Her favorite part of the role, she said, has been serving as a resource coordinator for Circles Cobb, a local nonprofit that works to reduce poverty in Cobb County. “Within my role, I’m able to provide essential resources and support to our families through weekly workshops focused on budgeting goals and overall development,” Boney said.

Her involvement with Student Volunteerism and Service has also opened doors to other opportunities on campus. She currently serves as community service director for Black Women Empowered, a registered student organization that provides mentorship, leadership training, and networking opportunities. In that role, Boney connects members with nonprofits and community partners.

“Being involved in service has truly shaped my experience [at KSU],” Boney said. “It’s allowed me to grow my confidence and leadership skills, and it’s strengthened my commitment to serving others in our communities. Working within this department has been very rewarding.”
