Credit by Exam Tables

Prior Learning Assessment opportunities allow students to accelerate their studies by earning college credit through examination. Some exams are completed in high school, CLEP and DSST can be taken during your studies at KSU which can allow you to complete some of your degree requirements.

Disclaimer: Please make sure to review the tables routinely as they can and will change. Current tables are in effect. In order to receive an credit, official test scores must be sent directly to KSU.

Quick Guidelines

A couple of quick guidelines:

  • No duplicate credit will be awarded
    • Example: earning ENGL 1101 in AP and IB. This will award a single instance of ENGL 1101 at 3 credits; not 6)
    • xT00 (elective) is an exception and may be awarded more than once
  • If a student earns credit for the same course from different exams, credit will be awarded from the exam that would provide the most credit
  • When an exam score corresponds to the same credit as a completed course, the course credit will be applied, if the course grade is “C” or higher
  • Course equivalencies are included in degree audit and/or transcript
  • Contact the College Board to request your official AP test scores to be sent to KSU to receive credit. Credit is not awarded based upon high school transcripts.

** 3000 Level course to be determined by Language Department

  • Some departments offer departmental challenge exams for advanced standing, which provides those students who demonstrate satisfactory evidence of acquired knowledge from prior learning to receive course credit.

If you are seeking permission to take challenge exams for BIOL 2251, BIOL 2252, BIOL 3317 or CRJU 3315 make the request through Owl Express. See Student Credit by Examination Application for further instructions.

  • Georgia Code 32-171 states that “...no undergraduate student in any college or university shall receive a certificate of graduation or a degree without successfully completing course work or previously passing a satisfactory examination on the history of the United States and the history of Georgia, and upon the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Georgia.” No student can receive an undergraduate degree without meeting these requirements.

These requirements are met by successfully completing the following courses:

    •  U.S. and Georgia History: HIST 2111 U.S. History to 1877 or HIST 2112 U.S. History Since 1877
    • U.S. and Georgia Constitution: POLS 1101 American Government
The USG Legislative Requirements at KSU pdf includes information on United States and Georgia History and Constitution Exams as an optional way to fulfill the requirements.

Transfer credit equivalent to the above courses from outside of the State of Georgia or from credit-by-exam will satisfy the appropriate US Constitution and US History legislative requirements. Georgia Constitution and Georgia History requirements for degree-seeking students in these cases will have to take the KSU course (s) or pass the relevant Georgia Constitution and/or Georgia History exemption examinations available through our Testing Center.

Please see the University System of Georgia website for more information on Legislative Requirements.

Please see the Table of Private Institutions for information on transferable courses from private institutions in the state of Georgia that will meet the Legislative Requirements.
