Faculty Excellence at the Coles College of Business

The faculty of the Coles College of Business are leaders in teaching, research, and service who bring academic expertise and real‑world experience into the classroom and the broader business community. Through innovative instruction, impactful scholarship, and active engagement with industry, our faculty shape the learning environment and contribute meaningful insights that advance both business practice and academic thought.

Teaching

Within the Coles College of Business, our talented faculty strive to harness, develop, and capitalize on the diversity of our student body. Through the balance of relevance and theory in their teaching, our faculty foster constructive competitiveness, candid inquiry, critical thinking, innovation, and creativity.

Prior to joining our faculty, most of our professors spent time in the private sector, practicing in their areas of expertise. They have maintained those professional relationships and continue to actively foster new industry partnerships that benefit our students, impacting classroom consulting projects, interaction with industry leaders, mentorship, and employment. These relationships and experiences enrich our curriculum and ensure its responsiveness to industry needs; they, also, help us to cultivate a new generation of leaders that can answer the demands of a rapidly changing global market.

Research & Highlights

Breakthrough research by a faculty member does more than boost an institution's reputation; it can bring immediate value to the students as well. Scholarly contributions to the business industry and academia is key to the Coles College of Business mission. Our faculty dedicate their time and passion to quality research, and are published in top-tier journals across the country and around the world.

What differentiates the Coles College from its peers is the balance of relevant research with theory. We believe that translating research findings into terms students and business professionals can immediately put into practice is vital to our mission and to improving the business ecosystem in which we operate. As a result, you will find Coles College faculty quoted as frequently in business journals as national media.

Research Highlight: Optimal Allocation of Resources in Airport Security

jomon paul

Jomon Paul, Professor of Quantitative Analysis

A major area of contemporary research focuses on designing smart policies to counter terrorism. While governments have effectively prevented many attacks, the financial burden has been significant — funds that could otherwise support education, infrastructure, or other public priorities.

This study examines two critical questions:

  • What is the socially optimal level of security spending?
  • How should resources be allocated between profiling and screening once a security level is chosen?

Service and Engagement

Coles faculty serves through consulting in the business community by generating new programs, as journal editors and conference directors, as well as in our Centers and Institutes. For example, data from our BrainLab open new doors for brain-computer interfaces. Explore our Centers and learn more about their latest research.
