Department of Psychological Science Academic Distinction Statement

The Department of Psychological Science is a large and dynamic department in the Norman J. Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The department has more than 50 full-time and many part-time faculty supporting a major and minor in psychology, including a fully online undergraduate program. In the Department of Psychological Science, accomplished faculty guide students in the study of behavior and mental processes through a comprehensive program that promotes scientific thinking and cultivates transferable skills that lead to meaningful careers. Psychology majors gain valuable hands-on experiences and skill-building opportunities across the curriculum by engaging in high-impact practices such as study abroad programs, internships, peer mentoring, and research experiences. We offer a a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Psychology Minor, with in-person, hybrid, and online course offerings available.

What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. It is a wide-ranging discipline that includes many sub-fields of study, including, but not limited to health, forensics, clinical and counseling, social behavior, neuroscience, human development, and educational psychology.

What Courses are Part of the Psychology Major?

Courses in human development, research methods and statistics, personality and social psychology, biological bases, and learning and cognition provide our students with broad foundational knowledge and skills in the field of psychology. Students then select more specialized courses such as Industrial-Organization Psychology, Psychopathology, Forensic Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Health Psychology, Child Psychology, and more based on their interests and career goals. As part of their coursework, students are also exposed to the many career opportunities available in the field and form interconnections across their coursework via a senior capstone experience.
