The 8th annual student leader awards ceremony celebrates outstanding Owls at KSU.

Dr. Eric Arneson hands an award to Sofia Torres
The Division of Student Affairs hosted the 8th Annual Student Leader Awards at the Convocation Center to honor outstanding achievements and recognize the continued exemplary commitment of KSU students who serve their local and global communities.

Student Affairs received a record 205 nominations for students, fraternities and sororities, club sports, competition teams, and registered student organizations. The nominations are for students and groups that model extraordinary commitment to voluntary service on campus, school spirit, and dedication to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive campus.

"I've had the opportunity to meet with several of you, attend your events, and hear about the amazing things you all are doing that impact KSU," said Dr. Eric Arneson, the Vice President of the Division of Student Affairs. "The work you all have done this year to make KSU the vibrant campus it is has been tremendous to witness."

Student-organized events were also recognized during the awards. Brown Sound and Latin Soul, winner of the Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion event category, is a collaboration with Lambda Theta Phi Latino Fraternity and the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program. The program brought light to KSU's Latin American and Latinx Studies program and the opportunities for Latin heritage students and KSU students to learn about the history of other cultures. Topics discussed included:

  • The history of Chicanx Music in the US and its evolution.
  • The over-sexualization of Latinas.
  • A gallery walk facilitated by Dr. Silva.
