Internationally renowned researcher named Kennesaw State vice president for research

Kennesaw State University has named Phaedra Corso as vice president for research, effective Feb. 4. Corso currently serves as the director of the Economic Evaluation Research Group in the College of Public Health and the associate director of the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research at the University of Georgia.

Published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers at Kennesaw State University concluded that CrossFit is fairly safe compared to other types of training. After analyzing 3,000 survey responses of CrossFit participants, they found that people who are new to CrossFit or train less than three days a week are more likely to get injured.

College of the Arts music professor Laurence Sherr was honored with the University Distinguished Professor Award on Thursday during the annual Faculty and Staff Awards ceremony, presented by the Kennesaw State University Foundation. Sherr, along with more than two dozen faculty members, was formally recognized by President Pam Whitten.

The popular fitness program CrossFit is a safe training method for most people but could result in injuries for those who are new to it or don’t participate often, according to a four-year analysis conducted by Kennesaw State University associate professor of exercise science Yuri Feito. The study, published in the October issue of the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, examined the number of injuries related to CrossFit training, a fitness regimen that merges high-intensity exercise with multi-joint movements.

Kennesaw State Welcomes New President

Kennesaw State University officially welcomes Dr. Pamela Whitten today as its fifth president. Whitten’s first two weeks as president will be busy with tours of the Kennesaw and Marietta campuses and meetings with members of the campus community. In a message this morning sent to faculty, staff, and students, Whitten expressed her enthusiasm, thanked the interim president and provost for their service to the university and shared her vision for Kennesaw State as a university where “students are the center of the universe.”

Keeping the Faith

Seven years ago, Tim Lubben, a health and physical education instructor, suffered a mysterious paralysis of his legs, the cause of which doctors still have not determined. Losing function in his legs and having to use a wheelchair, combined with the lack of a diagnosis, discouraged Lubben and shook his once-strong faith. However, he persisted and gradually regained his positive outlook, while remaining dedicated to teaching at Kennesaw State.

Finalist Named for Kennesaw State University Presidency

Board of Regents Chairman James M. Hull and Chancellor Steve Wrigley announced today that the Board of Regents named Dr. Pamela Whitten as the finalist for the position of president of Kennesaw State University. Whitten currently serves as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Georgia, a position she has held since 2014.

Tackling New Opportunities

Taylor Henkle was as surprised as anyone last year when media outlets across the country began interviewing him for stories about Kennesaw State football. The national attention started with a picture taken of Henkle following his interception that sealed the Owls’ 16-14 victory at Montana State. Henkle was photographed holding Plank, a block of wood with eyes and a smile drawn on, which had become a trophy awarded to KSU defensive players who cause a turnover during a game. The photo went viral and turned Plank into a media sensation, generating more awareness of Kennesaw State football. Henkle was one of the first student-athletes to sign on when Kennesaw State began its football team, and he continued to contribute to many firsts for the young program.
