How to Set Achievable Exercise Goals (The New York Times)

s many as 65 percent of all people who begin an exercise program end up dropping out in three to six months. That might explain why less than 5 percent of adults obtain the minimum amount of regular exercise recommended by the federal government: At least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or some combination of the two. The problem is that most people simply don't have the right strategies to adhere to a program when barriers get in the way, said James Annesi, the vice president of research and evaluation at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta and a professor of health promotion at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

More than 3,100 students will graduate during Kennesaw State’s spring Commencement. The University’s six graduation ceremonies will be held in the KSU Convocation Center on the Kennesaw Campus, beginning Tuesday, May 8, at 10 a.m.

Showcasing Research

Steven Ho was inspired to help fight cancer by seeing friends battling the disease, and he began attending Kennesaw State’s annual Relay for Life even before he became a student at the University. Now a junior biology major at KSU, Ho has added the role of cancer researcher. Ho is working with professors Jonathan McMurry and Julia LeCher on research that potentially could result in new medical treatments to help fight cancer. Ho presented his research Thursday at Kennesaw State’s Symposium of Student Scholars, an annual showcase of student scholarship conducted during the past academic year. He was among the 441 students presenting 280 projects, the highest numbers in the symposium’s 23-year history.

Robert Stewart’s childhood dream of becoming a professional baseball player didn’t come true. However, he found a different way to join the organization he wanted to be part of from the day he attended his first major league baseball game. “I always said, if I can’t be a player, I want to work for the Atlanta Braves,” said Stewart, who graduated from Kennesaw State University in December 2016 with a degree in sport management.

Kennesaw State undergrads showcasing research at national conference

Kennesaw State University is being represented by nearly 100 students this week at the 2018 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Edmond, Oklahoma. More than 4,000 students from 400 colleges and universities are presenting their research April 4-7 at the prestigious annual conference. With 93 students attending, Kennesaw State's number of participants is second only to the host institution, the University of Central Oklahoma.

Lounging on beaches and soaking up the sun didn't hold a candle to opportunities for immersive learning and meaningful service projects for a group of Kennesaw State students. Teams of students are fanning out over this week's spring break to paint houses for Habitat for Humanity in Rome, Ga.; represent their colleges as Distinguished Global Ambassadors to the United Nations in Geneva; learn about global poverty and environmental sustainability at Heifer International in Arkansas; and study issues and culture in India.

Nursing graduates earn high marks on licensing exam

Graduates from Kennesaw State University's WellStar School of Nursing are earning their professional certifications at a higher rate than the national average. In 2017, 97 percent of KSU's Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates passed the National Council Licensure Examination on their first attempt. Nationwide, 87 percent of all first-time candidates passed the licensure exam last year, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Active bodies, active minds

Some students are doing double-takes when they get their first look at a new classroom in Kennesaw State University's Convocation Center. It is Kennesaw State's first kinesthetic classroom, where students engage in motion activities during class. The idea, supported by an increasing amount of research, is that keeping the body active helps stimulate the mind and enhance learning.
