Grad student seeks winning fitness formula

Grace Alexander came to Kennesaw State to learn how her body works and to improve its efficiency. The competitive triathlete has proven an apt pupil in the laboratory, in the classroom and on the course. Alexander, a first-year master’s student in exercise science, won a half-Ironman triathlon in Panama City Beach, Florida, last month, finishing the 1.2-mile swimming portion, the 56-mile bicycling leg and the 13.1-mile run in 4 hours, 33 minutes, 56 seconds.

Competition offers hands-on experience for grant-writing students

Kennesaw State senior Kylie Burns decided to major in human services because she wanted a path into a career where she can make a difference. She got an opportunity to do just that this semester as part of a KSU grant-writing class in which she helped a local nonprofit organization win a $15,000 award from the United Way of Greater Atlanta through its SPARK Prize competition, designed to fund projects addressing social challenges throughout the Atlanta metro area.

Master's Student Takes Unique Path to Graduate Research

Brent Uken took a different path in retirement than most retirees. Uken, 55, a former senior partner with a global consulting firm, stepped away from a 30-year professional services career in 2018 to follow his passion in the health and fitness arena. He enrolled at Kennesaw State University in August 2019 to pursue a master’s degree in applied exercise and health science. In addition to his studies, Uken is a graduate research assistant and a teaching assistant.

KSU alumna finds a spot on the team with Braves

Sophia Bowers connected a personal passion for sports with her professional and academic goals during her time at Kennesaw State University. A lifelong sports fan and athlete, the December 2019 graduate of Kennesaw State majored in sport management. Adept with numbers and seeking another skillset to increase opportunities in the workplace, she added a minor in statistics. She combined those pursuits for a job as a customer relations specialist in the business intelligence department of the Atlanta Braves, a position to which she was promoted after working on the gameday staff at Truist Park last year.

KSU researcher awarded NIH grant for project on gestational diabetes risk

Gestational diabetes affects nearly one in 10 pregnancies and is associated with children facing an increased risk of obesity and diabetes as adults. Kennesaw State University researcher Katherine Ingram is tackling these transgenerational health issues through a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Ingram, associate professor of exercise science in KSU’s Wellstar College of Health and Human Services, is the principal investigator for the $406,000 grant awarded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
