  Matthew Kirk (b. 1978, Ganado, Ariz.) is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. A self-taught artist, Kirk’s abstract assemblages and paintings are steeped in symbolism and iconography that take inspiration from colors and patterns found in turn-of-the-century Navajo rugs. Kirk will be the Windgate Artist-in- Residence at KSU in Fall 2024.

  The Zuckerman Museum of Art is pleased to present new work by artist Beth LaCour. The exhibition features a series of folded paper vessels as well as a large installation on the Project Walls. LaCour’s work focuses on hand folded sculptural paper vessels, reliefs, and lighting. She has taught printmaking as well as drawing, papermaking, sculpture, and digital processes at Randolph College (V.A.), Yavapai College and Northern Arizona University (A.Z.). A former artist-in-residence at Taliesi, her work is included in numerous national private and public collections. Currently, LaCour is the Studio Coordinator for both the Book Arts Studio and the Papermaking Studio at Penland School of Craft (N.C.).

  Annet Couwenberg: Sewing Circles features an overview of ten years of cultural research, digital experimentation, and finished artifacts. Couwenberg completed the work as part of her studio practice and in partnerships with cultural institutions in North America, Europe, and Asia. The artistic projects presented in this exhibition highlight the expanding technological parameters related to textiles and fabrics and their specific application in the arenas of scientific research, fashion and interior design, and contemporary social issues. The exhibition explores her depth of research as well as the multiple intersections that are revealed between established disciplines and fields of knowledge. Annet Couwenberg: Sewing Circles is curated by Lori Rubeling. The traveling exhibition is organized by the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, UMBC with support from Maryland State Arts Council.   Once you've turned in your grades for the semester, it's pretty tempting to close the computer and go bake cookies or pack for a trip or turn to other things. But you noticed some things this semester about what and how your students learned. Maybe you're still thinking about that one class session in the middle of the semester where everything went right (or nothing did). Maybe, as you're starting to calculate semester grades, you're seeing certain trends or surprises. This workshop will provide space and time for participants to reflect on how your teaching went this semester, and will include a set of takeaway strategies for reflecting on future semesters. A short "pre-work" prepatory assignment will be sent out a few days before the chat.

  Title: Biophysical and Biochemical Characterization of Flavone O-methyltransferase from Oryza sativa: Understanding and Engineering Enzymes to Enhance Flavonoid Biosynthesis in Plants
  Abstract: Methylated flavonoids exhibit enhanced biological activities compared to their unmethylated counterparts and function as antibiotics, antivirals, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, and antiallergic agents. During my time in the Master of Science in Chemical Sciences (MSCB) program at Kennesaw State University (KSU), I investigated the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway, focusing specifically on flavone 3'-O-methyltransferase (OsMT) from Oryza sativa (rice), an S-adenosyl methionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase involved in essential cellular processes, including the metabolism of xenobiotic and endogenous compounds. To elucidate the enzymatic function and potential applications of OsMT, we determined its three-dimensional (3D) structure and employed molecular biology and biochemical approaches to evaluate its activity and identify the roles of active site amino acid residues. Using QuikChange mutagenesis, I performed site-directed mutagenesis to generate point mutations targeting both the substrate and SAM cofactor binding sites. The contributions of these mutations to catalysis and binding were assessed through steady-state kinetics of wild-type and mutant enzymes, complemented by binding assays using nano differential scanning fluorimetry (nanoDSF) and microscale thermophoresis (MST). These kinetic and binding studies provided valuable insights into how specific mutations influence enzymatic activity and substrate specificity. Overall, this thesis work establishes a foundation for understanding key residues in OsMT function and contributes to our broader knowledge of flavone biosynthesis in rice. Furthermore, several OsMT mutants identified potential regions that can be engineered to alter enzyme characteristics, such as substrate specificity and catalytic efficiency. This approach has the potential to modify plant secondary metabolism to enhance resistance to pests or environmental stress and to enable the production of bioactive compounds with improved pharmacokinetic properties, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer flavonoids.

LaCour’s work focuses on hand folded sculptural paper vessels, reliefs, and lighting. She has taught printmaking as well as drawing, papermaking, sculpture, and digital processes at Randolph College (V.A.), Yavapai College and Northern Arizona University (A.Z.). A former artist-in-residence at Taliesi, her work is included in numerous national private and public collections. Currently, LaCour is the Studio Coordinator for both the Book Arts Studio and the Papermaking Studio at Penland School of Craft (N.C.).

  Online 40-Hour General Civil Mediation Training and Practicum

  July 9-12 & July 17-18, 2025

  The first 28-hour mediation training focuses on an understanding of the mediation process, communication skills, agreement writing, and mediation ethics. Mediation skills are taught in a highly interactive format through short lectures, group discussion, focused exercises and coached role play.  The training meets general mediation training requirements with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution (GODR). In addition, the training is approved for Continuing Legal Education (CLE'S) hours (28 hours regular including 3 hours of ethics) with the Georgia State Bar.
  
  The 12-Hour practicum will build upon the skills introduced during the General Civil Mediation Training.  It provides an opportunity for you to observe, reflect on and discuss the practice of mediation. The practicum may be taken in lieu of 5 real cases observations with an experienced mediator in mediation for the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution (GODR) for registration purposes.

  The Zuckerman Museum of Art is pleased to present the work of Matthew Kirk who served as the Fall 2024 Windgate Artists-in-Residence, and Annet Couwenberg who served as the Spring 2025 Windgate Artist-in-Residence. Artwork created by the artists during their residency is featured in a summer exhibition at the Zuckerman Museum of Art. Additionally, one artwork from each artist will become part of the Zuckerman Museum of Art permanent collection and will be utilized as a teaching tool to further learning engagement and cultural enrichment opportunities across the KSU campus. The2025 Windgate Artist-in-Residence exhibition was curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson.

Kirk will be the Windgate Artist-in- Residence at KSU in Fall 2024.

  Judges 40-Hour General Civil Mediaiton Training & Practicum

  This training is specifically geared for Judges in Georgia!

  This training focuses on an understanding of the mediation process, communication skills, problem-solving skills, agreement writing, and mediation ethics. Mediation skills are taught in a highly interactive format through short lectures, group discussion, focused exercises, and coached role-play. The workshop meets general mediation training requirements for registration with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution (GODR). In addition, the workshop is approved for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) hours (28 regular and 3 ethics).

  The 12 hour practicum will build upon the skills introduced during the General Civil Mediation Training. It provides an opportunity for you to observe, reflect on, and discuss the practice of mediation. The practicum may be taken in lieu of 5 real case observations in mediation for the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution registration purposes

  Registration Information: Each student must register for this event on GivePulse. Registration is required to participate in the Day of Service. You can only register to serve at one site.

  Transportation: All students will be required to ride Big Owl Bus transportation to and from campus.

  Registration Deadline: The registration deadline is August 18th. There are no opportunities for walk-up registration.

  This 3-week online, asynchronous course on Generative AI for Course Design & Student Engagement is designed to equip faculty with the skills to confidently and ethically use generative AI tools (specifically, Microsoft Copilot) to assist in course design, student engagement and workflow. This includes opportunities to develop, peer review and reflect on images, rubrics, learning activities and assignments co-created with AI tools. By completing this course, faculty will develop a foundational understanding of generative artificial intelligence and explore typical use cases in the higher ed environment.

  Accessible Teaching Essentials Workshop (Faculty Accessibility Workshop)

  This three-week workshop will introduce faculty who are new to the topic of accessibility to the issues at stake. It provides an approachable structure for making your course content accessible, shows you how to check course content for accessibility, and provides training and opportunities to create accessible course content.

  • Discuss the issue of accessible teaching and its legal and ethical ramifications.
  • Identify steps you can take to make your course accessible.
  • Discuss Universal Design for Learning as a strategy for addressing deficiencies.
  • Practice creating accessible course content.
  • Use Ally to review resources for accessibility.

  Duration in Hours and Minutes: Three weeks, approximately 3 hours per week investment.
