First Year Student Advising

All new First Year Students are required by KSU to attend a New Student Orientation. You should sign up for an orientation session as soon as possible.

Your KSU Orientation will include a session presented by Professional Business Advisors from the Coles College. Our session will explain the basics about the BBA [Bachelor of Business Administration] program requirements. You will receive our Undergraduate Handbook and other reference materials to help you plan your coursework and succeed in your business program.

Course Sequence Information for Business Majors

The information below is intended to help you select the courses you need to take during your first year. Some courses in your program have prerequisites - you cannot take a course until you complete its prerequisites. It is important to plan your schedule so that you complete courses in the proper order and are not held up later because you are missing a prerequisite. (In future terms, you can check the prerequisites for a course in the online KSU Undergraduate Catalog or in the registration system.

First Semester

Your highest priority should be to register for:

  • ENGL 1101
  • MATH 1111 or 1112 or 1113
(If you want to start with a higher math, discuss this with the Professional Business Advisors. Do NOT take MATH 1101 or MATH 1107.)
  • Your First Year Seminar/Learning Community requirement (see below)
  • If you are interested in the International Business major, you will be required to complete several courses at the 2000- and 3000-level in one of the foreign languages approved by Coles. If you need to take the most basic course in a language (1001) as preparation for the 1002 course (which counts toward your General Education requirements), you should take the 1001 course in your first semester.

Once you sign up for the above courses, there are several options for filling the remainder of your schedule. These options will be described in the reference material we give you at Orientation.

Second Semester

Your highest priority should be to register for:

  • ENGL 1102
  • MATH 1160 or 1190
(All business majors are required to take a Calculus course. If you want to take a higher Calculus class, discuss this with the Professional Business Advisors.)
  • ECON 2100 (Do not take ECON 1100 – it will not count anywhere in a business degree, not even as an elective.)
  • ACCT 2100

Once you sign up for the above courses, there are several options for filling the remainder of your schedule. These options will be described in the reference material we give you at Orientation.

Completing your English composition and your Math courses as soon as possible is important because they are prerequisites to some of the business courses.

There will be Professional Business Advisors present at your registration session to answer questions about the courses required for your BBA degree.

First Year Seminar/Learrning Community Requirement

Early in your first term at KSU (after your transfer credit has all been evaluated by the Registrar but no earlier than the 3rd week of classes), you should make an appointment with a Professional Business Advisor to discuss your plans for your remaining work at KSU.
